The current chapter deals with the problem of alcohol addicted patients. During their therapy, they described a sense of emptiness, low level of life satisfaction and difficulties in enjoying their lives. Those problems often caused them to return to psychoactive substance use. A longitudinal study of alcohol dependent patients (N=45) in the process of addiction therapy was conducted. The Relationships between Early Trauma, Dissociation, and Alexithymia in Alcohol Addiction

Objective Addiction is often considered a dissociative behavior that is related to alexithymia and developmental trauma. The study aims were to explore the relationships between early trauma, alexithymia, and dissociation. Methods A total of 117 (males=60; females=57) alcohol-addicted individuals and 117 healthy individuals (males=60; females=57) were administered a series of self-report questionnaires that assess traumatic experiences, alexithymia, and pathological dissociation. Pharmacology of Acamprosate: An Overview

In the last years important advances have been made in the development of drugs for the treatment of alcohol addiction. Acamprosate (calcium bis‐acetylhomotaurine) is one of the better established drugs in this field on the European market. This review focuses first on the pharmacokinetics of acamprosate. The published data and the recent advances in our knowledge on the mechanisms involved in the intestinal absorption and elimination of this drug are summarized.
